AMD X570 + PCIe 4 Challenges, Vega VII Boost Retooling

We have more information on Vega VII & Ryzen 3000 after meeting with AMD at CES. The Vega VII boosting behavior will be retooled from Vega 56/64.
Ad: Buy Gigabyte's Z390 Master motherboard ( on Amazon)
We also spoke with AMD about VBIOS lock-downs (and avoiding them), X570 chipset details, and spoke with separate sources about product release timing and challenges with PCIe 4.0.
We have a new GN store:

  • Update: Anandtech misreported the ROPs on Vega VII. It is 64, not 128. We met with AMD on-record for Vega VII and CPU discussion, but also spoke off-record with some of AMD's board partners. There is new information in this video not contained in the keynote.

    • +Skoopsro DLSS just means scaling the game down and applying some really advanced AA and RT cores are not really any useful yet. I'd actually take the Radeon VII but it looks like it will ve extremely rare, so.. yeah.. I guess I'm gonna just keep my Titan X. No real reason to upgrade yet

  • LATEST UPDATE: This card was NEVER meant to be a consumer graphics card. This was made for the artificial intelligence market, automotive industries. HBM2 was too expensive so AMD killed Vega development and focused on Navi. Taping issues during final production caused the delay of the Navi announcement at CES. AMD was losing money on Vega\HBM2. The only reason it was completed was to have a back up plan if Navi failed\delayed. Wait for Navi to be announced in June \ July release. • I understand some of the info in Pcie 4 but from what I've been reading Pcie 5 is basically around the corner, wouldn't it be smarter for both mobo and companies like AMD or Nvidia to wait a couple years to utilize the better standard? Or is the push for 4 going to be the standard in a typical PC for awhile like with gen 3?

    KyuzoMugenUndPanzerKyuzoMugenUndPanzerVor Tag
    • +silfumus I kinda understand that, but the question is more or less relevant since GN is talking about gen 4 rather than gen 5, which is the general confusion for me.

  • If Vega 7 overclocks/under volts and can be... unlocked (to what i dont know!) like Vega 56 could then it may be a very good card. A vega 56 could punch well above its weight when given a bit of prodding, drop in voltage and some sill memory overclocks could be achieved.

  • Well done AMD but all I hope is that they don’t put the price up of the new 3xxx cpus! And I’m a i9 9900k owner! As I want them to drive prices down and not follow suit and just match intel and nvidia pricing traits or we’re all screwed!

  • 3000 series on x370? I don't want to get my hopes up. Otherwise, more VRAM with VII compared to 2080 plus Ryzen being bottlenecked at 1080p and below means we got Intel/Nvidia killing Red team 4k gaming machines for cheap coming 2019. Was the slog through 2018 worth it? Gamers may be approaching our promised land with AMD as our prophet.
