  • The ocean also remains the cheapest real estate in the world

  • But isn't this eventualy going to change the habitat of the sea? don't underwater creatures want their familiar temperatures? isn't this going to change the temperature of the ocean, obviously not the whole ocean but the water that is near it.

  • Wait, does this mean I will need to get a scuba license to work on server hardware? Great idea with maintenance challenges. Also, I assume the ocean water will be pumped around inside as a source of air cooling, but ocean water is full of creatures that attach themselves to things, die, and calcify.

  • for people talking about the environment, it wont affect the ocean at all... its effectively impossible for it to actually raise the temp of the ocean or even much of the near by water, remember: theres said to be more underwater *volcanoes* than land ones, enough said really... and as long as u dont drop it on a reef its unlikely to harm any sea life if build half decent i think its an interesting idea id like to see the game plan for handling tsunami's and natural disasters

  • Why throw a server into ocean when you can pump cool water in heat sink and flush it. If corrosion is not a problem

    Dipak AhirDipak AhirVor Tag
  • So im not a fan of dumping more heat into the oceans, its just hiding "man-made" global warming in slower to detect enviorments... but overall less energy needed to transfer the heat will result is less heat generated. Im still waiting the ultra low powered servers...come on technology, advance already

  • I’m not an environmentalist. But if, say in 10 years all major companies moved to offshore, underwater pods, I wonder what sort of impact the heat exchange in the ocean would/could have on the overall ocean temps. Probably nill, but we do have a crap ton of data centers around the world now thanks to the growth of the cloud.

  • Climate change anyone?

Sebastian de KantzowSebastian de KantzowVor 2 Tage
  • at first this sounded like a really great idea, but in fact I think it's a terrible idea. Water tends to hold on to heat. What happens when because of our efforts to cool off of our data center like pods begin to heat up certain portions of our ocean water? I can't see how this is going to be a great long-term solution and not have it impact our ecosystem.

  • Micro plastics was yesterday. The future of ocean pollution will be left over under water server farms. Imagine if a company with such server farms goes bankrupt. Who is going to retrieve the servers if it doesn't bring you money. Sure the government could do it, but: - Who will do it in international waters - Why does this expensive form of waste collection have to be payed by taxes - What if there is an incomplete level of documentation around them. So you miss a few here and there. - What if they just get washed away. Nobody will search the ocean for ood money forsomething that can be replaced rather easy. @Techquickie: I think you could have asked a few more questions here.
